The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sent civil subpoenas to OpenAI and Anthropic on Wednesday as part of an investigation into potential consumer protection violations, Axios reported Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The demands, each exceeding 50 pages, seek records covering security incidents, safeguards, marketing and privacy policies. The agency also intends to require testimony from senior AI executives and request information from outside AI organizations, the report said.

The probe follows disclosures that unreleased AI models hacked websites or displayed deceptive or aggressive behavior during testing.
