TOKYO - NTT Inc. is considering the construction of Anthropic's first major data center in Japan with a value of around 1 trillion yen or 6.3 billion US dollars.

According to Kyodo News, quoted Wednesday, October 14, the project is planned to be built on the southern coastal area of Osaka Prefecture and handled by NTT Data Group Corp.

If realized, the project will be one of the main data center projects in Japan.

Anthropic opened its first office in Asia in Tokyo in October last year. The presence of the data center is expected to help the company expand its business in Japan amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

Data centers handle company information and sensitive personal data. Therefore, the existence of facilities in the country is considered important from the perspective of national security.

Domestic data centers are also considered to help reduce risks related to operations and data transfer.

Japanese Minister of Digital Toshiharu Furukawa said on Tuesday that the government had asked Anthropic to consider Japan as a data center location.

The request was made when Furukawa met with Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark in Tokyo.

The Japanese government also expressed its willingness to support the project.

Anthropic is one of the main developers of generative AI. Its Claude Mythos model is considered to have high capabilities in finding security gaps.

A number of governments in various countries are also trying to strengthen relations with Anthropic to gain access to the company's technology and information.
