Arkansas attorney general sues OpenAI over ChatGPT safety, consumer protection
Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin is suing OpenAI, alleging the company misrepresented ChatGPT’s safety and failed to adequately protect consumers, including minors.
Griffin says the lawsuit alleges violations of state consumer protection and children’s online privacy laws, along with claims of negligence, product design defects, and failure to warn.
The complaint cites alleged instances in which users, including minors, obtained instructions for self-harm or bypassed safety measures designed to prevent certain responses.
These are allegations in the lawsuit and have not been established in court.
Arkansas is seeking financial penalties and restitution for affected consumers, along with court orders requiring clearer disclosures about ChatGPT’s risks and restricting the collection of minors’ data.
The state is also asking a judge to halt advanced AI testing and development of models capable of recursive self-improvement until adequate safeguards are in place.
