Anthropic and OpenAI are reporting revenues that may or may not be supported by the facts. Here's why that matters to marketers.

This week, there have been claims about the annualized revenue rates (ARR) of OpenAI ($50 billion or $70 billion?) and Anthropic ($110 billion). Here’s why marketers should pay attention to them.

First thing to know: The claims are based on annualized run rate. That is the amount of income from a period of time — could be a month, a week, or whatever — extended out for a full year. So, it is a straight-line projection of a cherry-picked number based on the assumption that there will be no changes in the marketplace.

Anthropic and OpenAI, like many startups, use ARR a lot. Last month, for example, OpenAI claimed that less than 200 days after launch, ChatGPT Ads reached a $1 billion ARR. (For more details, see OpenAI’s audacious ad revenue claim)

That claim was widely reported, even though the company offered no proof to support it. And because it is privately owned, there is no way to confirm it is true. The same is true for all the AI giants’ ARR claims. Despite this, journalists have reported them as if they were certified facts.

To quote The Wall Street Journal:

“Anthropic had posted revenue of $11.6 billion in the second quarter, and just under $5 billion in the first quarter. Investors expect Anthropic to reach more than $110 billion in annualized revenue by year-end.” (Emphasis added)

The word “expect” is doing a lot of work in that last sentence. It is covering for the fact that this is a number from people with a vested interest in making the company look successful. That fact seems worth nothing. Now, I’ve only been a business journalist for 40 years, so what do I know? Just remember that all startup valuations should have the word “alleged” in front of them.

So, why does this matter to marketers?

First, last quarter AI spending drove roughly three-quarters of recent U.S. economic growth. Just the possibility that this is based on investor overconfidence should worry you, like it is worrying the International Monetary Fund and the Bank of International Settlements.

Second, well, I’m just going to quote myself here: “In addition to direct economic damage, marketers should also be concerned because a decline in the AI sector could expose profound structural weaknesses across the martech ecosystem. Much of it relies on AI-powered services — from predictive analytics and media targeting to content generation and customer personalization.”
