Anthropic Reveals a Major Surprise Ahead of Its IPO
Microsoft MSFT backed Anthropic is heading toward one of the most closely watched technology IPOs in years with a powerful message for prospective investors: revenue is surging, profitability is improving, and the company believes the economics of AI can scale faster than the costs.
At a pre-IPO investor meeting in San Francisco, Anthropic told attendees that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion, up roughly 45% from $11.6 billion in the second quarter and more than triple the $4.7 billion reported in the first quarter, according to Reuters.
The company also told investors it was profitable on an adjusted basis in Q3, a potentially important milestone as Wall Street becomes more skeptical of AI companies burning enormous amounts of capital.
Anthropic is reportedly targeting a valuation of more than $2 trillion for its eventual public listing.
That means the company is asking investors to believe its extraordinary growth can justify an equally extraordinary valuation.
Anthropic executives also highlighted how Claude is increasingly being used internally, including in work tied to designing a custom chip.
CEO Dario Amodei continued emphasizing AI safety, but notably avoided discussing human extinction at the investor event, despite Anthropic previously warning in its prospectus that advanced AI could pose catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.
The company's financial challenge remains enormous.
Anthropic has committed at least $518 billion over a decade to cloud services, computing and infrastructure. Last year, revenue reportedly rose twelvefold to nearly $4.6 billion, while operating losses exceeded $8 billion.
Investor Takeaway
I think the most striking number is the sequential growth.
Revenue moving from $4.7 billion in Q1 to $16.8 billion in Q3 implies an increase of roughly 257% in just two quarters.
That kind of growth helps explain why Anthropic believes a $2 trillion-plus valuation is achievable.
But the IPO debate will likely come down to one question: can revenue compound faster than infrastructure spending?
Adjusted profitability in Q3 is encouraging, but investors will need to determine how durable that profit is once massive cloud and computing commitments are fully reflected.
The key metrics to watch are revenue growth, gross margins, adjusted operating income, compute costs, customer concentration and the pace of infrastructure spending.
If Anthropic can sustain anything close to its current growth while proving that margins expand with scale, its IPO could become a defining test for the entire AI trade.
