Kansas attorney general sues OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT poses risks to children
KANSAS (KOAM) - Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced Oct. 14 that he is suing OpenAI, alleging the company misled Kansans about ChatGPT’s safety and violated state law.
Kobach said the lawsuit seeks to compel OpenAI to stop what he described as dangerous activities. The announcement did not provide further details about the case.
At a news conference, Kobach said ChatGPT can put vulnerable users, including children, at risk. He also cited concerns about effects on critical thinking, mental health, medical advice and relationships. Those claims were not independently verified.
Kobach was joined by the attorneys general of Iowa, Nebraska, West Virginia and Arkansas. He said Arizona, Idaho and Montana have filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI in their state courts.
OpenAI released ChatGPT in 2022. Kobach said the chatbot now accounts for nearly half of the U.S. chatbot market.
