The news: Anthropic will invest “tens of millions of dollars” in community benefits agreements for each of its data centres across the world, for a total in the billions, alongside several other commitments intended to deliver public benefit.
The context: The company said on its website that it would partner with “local leaders and residents” on where to direct spending near all data centre sites Anthropic owns or leases.
It could include “funding emergency services, building libraries and parks, paying teacher bonuses, improving local infrastructure, or lowering property taxes for households nearby”. An early example includes repairing the local water system near a site being developed in Texas.
In Australia, Anthropic has only signed on for capacity at Zerra DC’s proposed Western Downs facility in Queensland. The frontier AI lab is still looking to hire a local community engagement manager for data centres.
Other public benefits commitments include declining local tax incentives for future data centre sites, not asking public officials to sign non-disclosure agreements and publishing independently verified metrics.
Anthropic also pledged to support additional power generation and measures to limit water, noise and energy impacts.
