MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis non-profit The Jewel Guild Foundation is helping older adults learn about artificial intelligence. The organization will host AI literacy workshops through November.

ToDario Harris, chairman for the organization, told FOX13 it's important to help seniors learn new technology.

“We wanted to make sure that they had a platform to learn, a safe space to learn and providing this program was something that we felt was essential to ensure that they are not, you know, abused by individuals who are more advanced with AI technology," said Harris.

The workshops are held at UT-Health Science Center at 930 Madison Ave. It's free to attend for adults 50+. Devices will be available for anyone attending the in-person class. A virtual option is also available.

“One thing they will learn is how to properly identify scams as a part of this class," said Harris. "We're going to teach them digital prompting, how to properly prompt AI in order to give them the information that they're looking for.”

Harris said it took about six months to put the workshop together. The idea came from a board member of the organization who wanted to learn more about AI.

“We immediately went on and began doing research and putting the coursework together," said Harris. "Then when we saw that AARP challenge grant become available, we felt like that would be a good partnership, so we submitted and we won based off of that, that conversation that we had in our board meeting.”

Harris told FOX13 he hopes older adults come out of the workshop with a better understanding of how AI works and how to spot when it's being used as a scam.

“We want them to realize that, hey, you are the human behind this technology. You are in control," said Harris. "We want to make sure they're equipped and knowledgeable on how to properly use this.”

The organization asks that anyone interested in participating registers for the workshop that works best for them. You can register here.
