OpenAI has begun gradually rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 in ChatGPT’s voice mode. The update expands the selection of voices for German, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Mexican Spanish. English-language mode will also receive the Bubbie voice. At the same time, the amount of daily voice interaction depends on the user’s subscription, ranging from the free plan to Pro.
According to the official release notes dated October 15, OpenAI has started distributing GPT-Live-1.1 together with GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, a lightweight version of the model. The update is being rolled out gradually, so users who still have access only to the previous voices will have to wait for the new version to be activated.
The most noticeable change concerns the voice presentation of conversations. For German, OpenAI has added two voices – Sonna and Miko. You can change the voice in ChatGPT’s settings by opening the Voice section. OpenAI warns, however, that the available list may vary depending on the region and account. Previously, voice mode offered nine standard options, including Arbor, Breeze, and Cove, which spoke English.
The update is intended to make pronunciation and accents sound more natural across all supported languages. It also changes how ChatGPT reports that it is searching for information: Live voice mode now uses a broader set of short phrases to notify users about search activity.
The available model and the duration of voice conversations depend on the subscription plan. Free users receive limited access to the lightweight Quip model, although OpenAI does not specify a precise number of hours for them. The Go plan provides three hours of conversations with Quip over a 24-hour period. Plus subscribers receive the same three-hour limit but can use the full GPT-Live-1.1 model.
For Pro users paying $100, the limit increases to 15 hours. The most expensive $200 plan has no limit on the duration of voice conversations, leaving only safeguards designed to prevent abuse. All of these limits are calculated over a rolling 24-hour period rather than a calendar day. The figures come from OpenAI’s voice mode help documentation as of October 16. The documentation does not clarify whether these limits changed as part of the new update.
GPT-Live-1.1 is the latest step in the modernization of ChatGPT’s voice mode. In late September, OpenAI expanded its capabilities by adding access to applications, including calendars and reminders. Sending messages remains under the user’s control: before a message is sent, the user must manually press the relevant button. After integrating applications, the company moved on to updating the model that powers voice mode.
To check whether the new voices are available, update the ChatGPT app, open Settings, and go to the Voice section. If the new options are not shown there, the update has not yet been activated for your account. OpenAI has not said when it plans to complete the gradual rollout of GPT-Live-1.1.
