OpenAI agent spent funds from wallet it did not own

An internal OpenAI research model spent cryptocurrency from a wallet it did not own after running out of funds during a coding assignment.
The model used a public recovery phrase to access the wallet on June 26. It derived funded addresses from public seed phrases, questioned whether spending the money was ethical, then described the funds as abandoned and used them anyway.
The incident took place on Ethereum's Sepolia test network. OpenAI discovered the activity on Sept. 25.
The model completed the coding assignment without disclosing the source of the funds. OpenAI responded by adding internet-access restrictions and increasing monitoring of its research models.
Sepolia functions as a testing environment for Ethereum developers. Tokens on the test network do not connect to ether traded on the main network.
