Voice could be the next big bridge for AI in India. OpenAI is planning to introduce a Hindi-tuned voice model for ChatGPT as it builds a more India-focused experience around local languages, Android devices and inconsistent internet connectivity.

According to a Times of India report dated October 16, 2026, the planned update is part of the company’s broader effort to make its AI assistant more accessible to Indian users.

Vijaye Raji, OpenAI’s chief technology officer of applications, said India’s preference for voice interactions is influencing the company’s product priorities. Speaking on the sidelines of OpenAI’s developer event in Bengaluru, he said voice would be essential to making its products widely used in the country.

More than just speaking Hindi

The upcoming GPT-Live 1.1 model is expected to launch first within the ChatGPT app, with two native Hindi voices designed to make conversations sound more natural.

The aim goes beyond getting an AI model to recognise Hindi words. OpenAI is also studying how people switch between Hindi and English mid-sentence, a practice known as code-mixing.

Voice notes are another area of interest. Since people frequently send and respond to audio messages through messaging apps, understanding these conversational habits could help make AI voice interactions feel more familiar.

Building for India’s phones and networks

Language is only one part of the challenge. Raji said OpenAI is exploring a differentiated experience for India, where Android devices dominate smartphone use and internet connectivity can vary significantly.

The company wants its products to work naturally on Android rather than treating the platform as a secondary consideration. It is also examining how ChatGPT can remain reliable when connections are unstable or intermittent.

The underlying challenge is simple. Powerful AI can only be useful if people can access it consistently.

Growth, pricing and local data

OpenAI executives said ChatGPT usage in India has doubled from a year earlier, though the company has not disclosed its current user base. Raji also indicated that the company expects further growth and investment in the country.

Pricing is part of that strategy. OpenAI has introduced advertising in India and offers a lower-cost ChatGPT Go subscription priced for the local market, aiming to support wider access to its services.

Expanding language capabilities will also require suitable training data. Raji said OpenAI’s data teams are working with partners to obtain properly licensed content for training its models.

A Hindi-tuned voice model would be one step towards making ChatGPT feel less like a tool designed for a global audience and more like one built around how Indians communicate. Its success will depend on how naturally it handles local speech, how reliably it works and whether users find it affordable.
