OpenAI began rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 on October 15, an update to the voice model behind ChatGPT Voice, Codex and its dots app. It adds 13 new voices and more natural accents.

The new voices cover six non-English languages, with two each in French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish. There is one new English voice called Bubbie, and English speakers keep the nine existing voices.

OpenAI says accents sound more natural in more languages. The voice also repeats its “checking...” phrase less often when it searches the web, with more variety in what it says.

Live mode now runs on two models: GPT-Live-1.1 and GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, a mini version. The update is available to all ChatGPT users, but usage time depends on the plan. According to ChatGPT’s voice guide, free users get limited access through Quip, Go users get three hours with Quip, plus users get three hours with the full model. The $100 Pro plan allows up to 15 hours, and the $200 Pro plan is unlimited.

An API release is coming, but OpenAI has not given a date. For the earlier GPT-Live-1, the ChatGPT launch came on July 8 and the API followed on September 10, about two months later.

OpenAI has not published benchmarks, latency figures or direct comparisons with GPT-Live-1, so the improvements are claims for now. Hindi speakers are among those who gain new voices, a sign of how much attention voice AI is paying to the Indian market.
