We Asked AI Chatbots for 1 Stock to Buy This Week. No One Picked Tesla. - Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), GE Aerospace…
Three AI chatbots were asked to name one stock to buy this week. Each chose a different company in a different part of the market. ChatGPT picked GE Aerospace (NYSE:GE), Grok picked Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:NFLX), and Claude picked Valero Energy Corp. (NYSE:VLO).
All three companies will report their quarterly financial results before the market closes on Friday. Each chatbot based its choice mainly on these upcoming reports.
On Monday morning, each chatbot received the same prompt with 10 requests. They had to name their top stock pick, explain what might make its price move, share their main reasons and key data, identify the biggest risk, suggest a trading plan with a buying price, a target price and a stop-loss price, give a confidence score, name two other stocks to consider, and provide sources.
The Picks at a Glance:
ChatGPT: GE Aerospace
ChatGPT said GE's earnings report on Tuesday could help its stock price move in the near term, especially after the market fell last week. The chatbot pointed out that GE had reported earnings above expectations for four quarters in a row. It also noted that many analysts were positive about the company and that demand for aerospace products remained an important investment theme.
ChatGPT reported that GE's stock had risen 1.88% since the start of the year as of Oct. 16. Its 52-week price range was $268.91 to $388.84, and its 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI), a measure of recent price movement, was 46.08, a neutral reading. The chatbot also mentioned that Bernstein repeated its Outperform rating on Oct. 16, while Deutsche Bank lowered its price target to $377 on Oct. 13.
In ChatGPT's view, the biggest risk was that GE might give a weaker outlook or report lower demand for engine maintenance and services. Either could cause investors to sell the stock after the earnings report. The chatbot suggested buying at a price between $310 and $316.
Grok: Netflix
Grok chose a stock that had been struggling. According to Benzinga Pro market data, Netflix was down about 25% since the start of the year and was trading near the bottom of its 52-week range of $65.08 to $124.86.
The chatbot argued that Netflix's falling share price, high trading activity, and position as the first major technology company to report earnings that week could create a chance for a strong rebound if its results beat expectations.
Grok pointed to options market prices that suggested Netflix's stock could move about 9.5% in either direction. It also cited an expected earnings-per-share figure of about $0.82 and growth in Netflix's advertising-supported plan. The biggest risks it identified were weak advertising results, lower user engagement, or a cautious outlook from the company.
Grok had the highest confidence in its pick, giving Netflix a score of 7 out of 10.
Claude: Valero
Claude chose an energy company because the energy sector led the market on Friday while technology stocks fell behind. Claude pointed to Reuters reporting based on data from Vortexa, which showed that Iran's seaborne crude oil exports had fallen to zero in September and remained at zero into October.
Claude reasoned that limited oil supplies could help keep refining profit margins strong during the quarter Valero was about to report. Valero's results were due Thursday morning, giving investors two full trading sessions before Friday's close to react to the news.
Claude said the biggest risk was news that the United States and Iran were easing tensions. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices were already down about 2% on Monday morning. A further fall in oil prices could hurt refiners before Valero reported on Thursday.
Where the Bots Overlap
None of the three chatbots chose the same stock as its top pick. However, three companies appeared on two of the chatbots' lists each:
- Netflix: Grok's top pick and Claude's third choice.
- Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA): ChatGPT's and Grok's second choice. Tesla was due to report its third-quarter results on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
- Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META): ChatGPT's third choice and Claude's second choice. Meta was also due to report on Wednesday. Claude said the results would test whether the company's spending on AI was paying off, following a 4.5% weekly drop in the Nasdaq.
Grok's third choice was Lam Research Corp. (NASDAQ:LRCX), which was scheduled to report its fiscal first-quarter results on Wednesday after the market closed. Grok pointed to demand for equipment used to make semiconductor wafers for AI chips.
What Comes Next
The results will soon show how the picks perform. GE was scheduled to report on Tuesday before the market opened, and Netflix was due to report after the market closed that day. Valero's report would follow on Thursday morning.
