MetLife's ChatGPT Integration Opens a New Pet Insurance Growth Avenue
MetLife, Inc. (MET) is growing its digital sales strategy by connecting its pet insurance website to ChatGPT. It is the first major pet insurance provider to offer interactive conversations and binding insurance quotes through the platform. Customers can learn about coverage, answer questions about their pets, and get personalized quotes before finishing their purchases on MetLife’s website.
This launch comes as veterinary care becomes more expensive and few pets have insurance. MetLife’s data shows that one-third of employees worry about paying for pet care, but fewer than 10% have pet insurance. Meanwhile, 70% of pet owners have delayed or skipped veterinary treatment because of the cost, and more than one-third say their pets’ health has gotten worse. These figures point to growing demand for pet insurance.
For MetLife, the main benefit is making it possible for people to explore insurance and get quotes through a conversational platform. Making the first steps of shopping easier could help the insurer reach people who are comfortable using digital tools and encourage more potential customers to consider coverage. It also gives MetLife another way to sell insurance without needing to expand its traditional sales operations by a similar amount.
The integration could help MetLife collect more premiums if greater customer interest leads to more insurance sales. A simpler application process could also make sales more efficient. However, selling more policies does not automatically mean earning more profit. The cost of claims, whether prices are high enough to cover costs, and whether customers keep their policies will still play important roles in the company's insurance results.
MetLife has not shared financial targets or estimates of how much revenue this integration might bring in, so its short-term effect on earnings is unclear. Its success will depend on whether the convenience of shopping with AI leads to continued policy sales. Even so, the project expands MetLife’s digital sales options and could create another source of long-term growth.
How Are MetLife's Competitors Faring?
Two of MET's competitors in the pet insurance market are Chubb Limited (CB) and The Progressive Corporation (PGR).
Chubb's Healthy Paws serves more than half a million pet owners. It offers flexible insurance coverage, virtual veterinary consultations available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a simple claims process. Most claims are processed within two days. These features help Chubb compete by combining broad pet insurance options with convenient digital services and fast claims handling.
Progressive expanded its pet insurance business in January 2026 by adding a plan underwritten directly by the company and managed by Companion Protect. This is in addition to its existing arrangement with Pets Best. The new plan offers customizable coverage for accidents and illnesses, with optional benefits for routine care. This expands PGR's range of products and strengthens its ability to meet growing demand for help paying veterinary bills.
