Marquette is moving forward with recommendations from its university-wide AI Task Force. This is the next step in the university’s effort to use artificial intelligence in ways that support its mission and values.

Formed during the 2025-26 academic year, the AI Task Force brought together more than 60 faculty and staff members from across the university. They studied how AI affects teaching and learning, clinical education, research, university operations, wellness and student success. The group looked at new trends, studied what similar universities were doing, gathered feedback from the Marquette community and developed recommendations based on the university’s Catholic, Jesuit mission. A university-wide survey with about 650 responses also helped guide the work.

The task force presented its recommendations to the Executive Leadership Team. These recommendations are helping guide the university’s ongoing work to support responsible AI use that fits its mission.

Key priorities for the coming year

The task force grouped its recommendations into three main areas:

  • Rules, oversight and guidance
  • University tools and investment
  • Training and AI skills

Suggested steps include creating a system to oversee AI use, updating relevant university policies, sharing common guiding principles, offering more training and choosing important projects that can help guide future spending and decisions.

Other priorities include choosing and supporting AI tools approved by the university, making guidance and training resources easier to find and use, and making sure the university’s technology systems can meet new needs.

The recommendations aim to help Marquette support new ideas while protecting privacy and security, maintaining academic honesty, encouraging ethical decisions and supporting student well-being.

Explore Marquette’s AI resource website

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to visit Marquette’s central AI resource website. This is the university’s main place to find guidance about AI, approved tools, training opportunities, policies, resources and recommended practices.

The website was created through teamwork across the university and includes separate resources for faculty, staff and students. It also has a “What’s New” section with the latest AI news, resources, events and opportunities from across the university.

Community invited to yearlong AI discernment series

One project based on the AI Task Force’s findings is “What Are We Building? A Year-long Communal Discernment Exercise about AI,” a series of events and activities taking place throughout the 2026-27 academic year. Inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, the project recognizes that Catholic universities have an important role in helping people think about the moral and spiritual questions raised by a world increasingly shaped by AI.

The series will include events organized by different groups across the university. It will invite the Marquette community to explore five key questions inspired by the encyclical. Together, these questions offer a shared way to think not only about what society is building with AI, but also why it is being built, how it is being developed and who it is meant to help.
