The announcement:
The documentary premieres on Tuesday 10 November at 7.30pm AEDT.
Every generation faces a moment that changes society. For our generation, that moment is artificial intelligence (AI), which is changing the world quickly.
In Artificial Intelligence: Who’s in Control?, News24 National Affairs Correspondent Jonathan Lea talks to people in Australia and other countries. He investigates who may benefit from the rapid growth of AI, who could be left behind, and whether anyone is really in control.
For some people, AI has already caused deeply personal harm. One woman explains how she lost her job after 25 years because AI replaced her. A mother who is grieving tells the heartbreaking story of her 16-year-old son, who died after seeking advice from ChatGPT.
Jonathan meets people who are building new technology and people who are fighting against it. Bestselling thriller writer David Baldacci describes the “horrifying” moment he saw ChatGPT write a novel in his style. He explains why he is taking legal action against Microsoft and OpenAI. In another worrying test, a cybersecurity expert shows how easily someone could steal Jonathan’s identity using only a photograph and a free app.
Jonathan Lea said: “This documentary explores whether AI helps us become better people or makes us less human. There is no doubt that AI can help level the playing field. But I am not sure we fully understand what we may have to give up in return for its promises, or the real cost to people.
“I worry that humans could become a lesser species on our own planet. We may be creating a powerful technology that rules over all of us.”
