Uber is giving more than 30,000 employees access to ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s AI agent for office tasks, after testing it with 1,000 staff members, OpenAI said. The tool connects to Gmail, Google Drive and Slack and uses GPT-6.1 Sol by default. The move comes as Uber tries to control how much it spends on AI.

Uber is giving more than 30,000 employees access to ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s AI agent for office tasks, OpenAI said on Thursday. The company-wide launch follows a test involving 1,000 employees.

ChatGPT Work, which OpenAI launched in July, can complete tasks that involve many steps and deliver finished work. It connects to tools such as Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar and Slack. Employees can use it to prepare meeting notes, create slides and study data.

By default, the tool will use GPT-6.1 Sol, an AI model that OpenAI released last month. It costs about one-fifth as much as the company’s most expensive model. Uber’s engineers will continue to use Codex, OpenAI’s tool for writing code.

“As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber’s future,” said Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber’s chief technology officer.

The launch comes as Uber tries to get more value from its AI spending. In August, Neppalli Naga said the time of “tokenmaxxing”, or spending freely on AI, was coming to an end. Reports said Uber had already used its entire 2026 budget for Anthropic’s Claude Code by April.

Uber has also linked job cuts to its use of AI. In July, it laid off 10% of its customer service team. This was the first time the company had linked job cuts to an effort to use AI.

OpenAI and Uber said they will share information about how employees use the AI agent and what results it delivers as the rollout continues.
