The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed a beginner's module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12. NCERT announced the launch of the module in a press release on October 23, 2026.
The AI module will help school students understand new technologies and improve their problem-solving skills, in line with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
In a post on X, NCERT said, “Designed for beginners, the module encourages critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving through hands-on, activity-based learning with or without digital devices.” The module aims to develop students' critical thinking and creativity through practical activities instead of depending only on theory.
NCERT AI module focuses on practical learning
The NCERT module will use activities, discussions, exercises, and experiments to help students understand computational thinking and artificial intelligence. Students can take part in these activities with or without digital devices.
According to the notice, “The module adopts an experiential, activity-based learning approach through discussions, practical exercises, experimentation, and reflection. Activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, ensuring meaningful participation across diverse school contexts.”
The NCERT computational thinking module will help students use AI-based technologies responsibly. It also explains that technology should support learning, while people must use their own thinking and creativity to make decisions.
Students will also learn about the ethical challenges linked to AI. The notice states, “Special emphasis is placed on the ethical and safe use of AI, including data privacy, misinformation, fairness, digital safety, and critical verification of AI-generated information. The module encourages students to become informed, confident, and responsible users of technology.”
