AI company Anthropic files its IPO in hopes of raising $100 billion
Anthropic has filed the papers needed to sell its shares on the stock market for the first time. This could be one of the biggest stock market offerings in history. The company has not yet made a profit.

Anthropic, a major artificial intelligence company, filed papers on Monday to sell its shares on the stock market for the first time. Analysts say this could be one of the biggest stock market offerings in history.
Reports say the initial public offering (IPO), which is when a company sells shares to the public for the first time, could happen as early as November. Analysts value the company at between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion.
What did the Anthropic founders say about the IPO?
The company's seven co-founders, including brother and sister Dario and Daniela Amodei, explained their plans for the future of AI in a letter to people who might invest in the company.
"We believe AI is one of the most consequential technologies in human history," they said.
The company behind Claude also discussed the risks AI could pose to society, as it has done before. Its leaders wrote that they might need to make unusual choices to slow down AI development, even if doing so meant losing ground to competitors.
The IPO filing is a major step for a company founded just five years ago.
The money raised by selling shares could give the company huge resources to grow and expand more quickly.
AI gets lots of attention, often causes fear, and may be overvalued
What do we know about Anthropic's IPO?
Anthropic plans to list its shares on the Nasdaq stock market under the symbol "ANT."
But the company has not yet said how many shares it plans to sell or how much each share will cost. These details were left blank in the papers it filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday.
Anthropic first filed confidential papers with the SEC in June. This gave the agency time to review the company's financial information before it was shared with the public and possible investors.
Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley will lead the team helping Anthropic sell its shares.
Anthropic's stock market debut follows SpaceX's IPO
The company, based in San Francisco, was founded in 2021 by people who left OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.
OpenAI, Anthropic's main competitor, is also expected to sell shares on the stock market next year.
Both companies are planning IPOs at a time when worries about AI are growing. There is also a race to build the systems needed to run AI, including data centers that use huge amounts of energy.
The papers Anthropic filed show that its revenue has grown very quickly, but the company has still not made a profit. Its AI competitors face similar problems.
Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026. In the same period a year earlier, its loss was $13 billion.
Despite these losses, the company said it had $112.4 billion in cash and cash-like assets on June 30.
Reports say Anthropic's IPO could raise as much as $100 billion. That would be more than the current record set by Elon Musk's SpaceX, which raised $86 billion. SpaceX's offering was the biggest IPO ever recorded up to that point.
