OpenAI Unveils Half-Price AI Model to Target Enterprise Automation

OpenAI is releasing GPT-6.1 Terra, a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that costs half as much as two of its other models. The company says it is useful for automating large amounts of work, such as reading invoices and entering their details into accounting software. OpenAI announced the model in a press release on Monday, October 26.
According to the announcement, GPT-6.1 Terra is a major improvement over GPT-5.6 Terra. Its standard application programming interface (API) prices are 50% lower than those of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
The company says GPT-6.1 Terra is good at handling large amounts of work, communicating and completing tasks on computers. These tasks include writing proposals, understanding technical drawings, filling out forms and editing videos.
OpenAI made GPT-6.1 Terra available on Monday to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users through ChatGPT Work and Codex. Developers can also use it through the OpenAI API, according to the announcement.
“Terra continues to advance the cost-intelligence frontier across our model families, providing a new balance of speed, capability and cost,” OpenAI said in the announcement.
Bloomberg reported on October 9 that OpenAI’s business serving companies is helping drive its revenue growth. The company’s annualized revenue is expected to reach at least $70 billion by the end of the year, up from $50 billion at the end of September.
When OpenAI began releasing ChatGPT Work on July 9, it described the product as a new AI agent designed to handle complex work that goes beyond a typical chat request. OpenAI said ChatGPT Work can take action across a user's apps and files, spend hours working on a project when needed, and create finished materials such as spreadsheets, slides, documents, web apps and other outputs.
In July, OpenAI announced changes to improve how much work its models could complete for each dollar spent on business tasks. The company cut the price of GPT-5.6 Luna by 80% and GPT-5.6 Terra by 20%. It also made GPT-5.6 Sol faster when used through the API without changing its price.
“The GPT-5.6 family expands the range of those choices,” OpenAI said in a blog post at the time. The company was referring to users' ability to choose the model that best fits the results they want. “Businesses can apply the maximum useful intelligence at every stage while paying the right price for the value it creates.”
