  • OpenAI has introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a new AI model that offers a strong balance between cost and performance.
  • Astra is still OpenAI's most powerful model, but Terra can produce results that are nearly as good at a much lower cost.
  • Terra performs similarly to GPT-6.1 Sol but costs about half as much to run.

AI is improving so quickly that making a model bigger and better is no longer the only goal. Progress can also mean making a model more efficient, so it performs as well as another model while costing much less. That's what OpenAI is showing with its new GPT-6.1 Terra.

It's been almost a month since we first saw GPT-6.1 Sol. Today, OpenAI has introduced its next model in the 6.1 series, GPT-6.1 Terra. It follows GPT-5.6 Terra, which launched this past summer, and promises major improvements in performance and efficiency.

There are now several models to keep track of. GPT-6 Astra is currently the most powerful option, but concerns have affected plans to launch a 6.1 version. GPT-6.1 Sol offers performance similar to Astra at a lower cost, while GPT-6 Luna focuses on keeping costs low rather than matching Astra's performance. Terra sits between Sol and Luna, aiming to offer a good balance of performance and price.

Terra is designed to cost a little less than Sol while delivering similar performance. Even more impressively, GPT-6.1 Terra costs just 50% as much to use through its API as GPT-5.6 Terra. In some cases, it can even perform better than Astra while keeping costs low:

One reason Terra costs less is that it can finish tasks faster than similar models. OpenAI says Terra completes tasks that involve using a computer three times faster than the latest versions of Astra and Sol.

AI models can sometimes give wrong answers while sounding certain that they are right. Terra makes important improvements in this area, too. It makes fewer mistakes than GPT-6 Luna and costs about half as much to run as Sol.

For people who already like GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra looks worth trying. In many tests, it delivers very similar performance, usually at a lower cost.
