According to a media report on Monday, Broadcom (AVGO), a company that makes computer chips, spent nearly two months trying to persuade banks to provide more than $40 billion for what would be the biggest-ever debt deal for artificial intelligence. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan reportedly stepped in to help finalize the $63 billion deal. The plan was to let Anthropic (ANTHO) lease special computer chips.

Broadcom has a strong credit rating, which allowed it to promise financial support if needed. These guarantees helped banks feel safer about lending such a large amount for the deal. What risks did banks consider when financing Anthropic's $63 billion chip lease deal?
Banks worried that interest rates could rise and that the AI investment market could face problems. They were also unsure whether they would earn enough to make up for the risks of such a large loan. How is Broadcom protected if Anthropic fails to make its chip lease payments?
Broadcom takes on risk only if Anthropic cannot make its payments. Its financial guarantees and strong financial position also help protect lenders if Anthropic fails to pay.
