Anthropic plans to sell shares to the public for the first time through an initial public offering (IPO). This plan is drawing attention to both the business opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI) and the risks of increasingly powerful AI systems. The company reports that demand from businesses is growing quickly, while also warning about AI safety risks.

Anthropic, which makes the Claude chatbot, made its IPO filing public on Monday. The filing shows that its business with companies is growing quickly. However, it also warns investors that advanced AI systems could cause disasters if they are developed or used without enough safety measures.

The company said in the document that its models could cause serious harm if people misused them, turned them into weapons, copied them or allowed them to work with a high level of independence.

It also warned that AI systems could help people build newer models faster than researchers can test them and put the right safety measures in place.

These warnings come as Anthropic gains more business customers.

As of September 30, the company had more than 11,900 customers who each generated at least $100,000 in revenue for Anthropic over the previous 12 months. More than 1,900 customers spent at least $1 million, while about 250 spent $10 million or more, according to the filing.

Anthropic's revenue per employee also rose to more than $6.6 million in the 12 months ending September 30. A year earlier, the figure was $1.4 million. This shows that the company has been able to grow its business with a relatively small workforce.

The filing gives investors a clearer view of the business opportunities offered by the most advanced AI models. Companies are increasingly using these models as part of their daily work.

However, Anthropic also faces risks. These include relying on major customers, competing with other AI developers and paying for the large amounts of computing power needed to train and run advanced models.

Markets reacted positively to the IPO news on Monday. Stocks linked to AI rose. Nvidia gained nearly 3 per cent, while Microsoft and Amazon each rose about 1 per cent. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed more than 3 per cent, as chipmakers and other companies connected to AI infrastructure also gained.

However, excitement about Anthropic's possible stock market listing comes at a time when people are concerned about companies borrowing money to pay for AI infrastructure. There is also uncertainty about whether current levels of spending on AI can continue.
