Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI chatbot, reported an $80 billion loss as it announced plans to go public.

According to The Washington Post, Anthropic lost $80 billion in the first half of 2026. The company spent heavily on training new AI models and securing space in data centers to run Claude and the coding tools it sells to businesses. At the same time, its revenue grew quickly, rising from $1.16 billion in the first half of 2025 to $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026. That was a 14-fold increase, according to a filing the company submitted on Monday.

Anthropic has submitted a Form S-1 registration statement to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission as the first step toward offering its Class A shares to the public. The company plans to list the shares on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol "ANT." It has not yet decided how many shares to offer or what their price range will be.

Reports suggest that going public could help Anthropic get ahead of OpenAI and raise a large amount of money to speed up its growth. The company has already been moving into new fields. For example, it recently set up a wet lab for biology research.
