OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster and cheaper AI model designed to handle everyday computer tasks that take up much of an office worker’s day. It replaces GPT-5.6 Terra and sits in the middle of OpenAI’s range of models, below Sol and Astra but above Luna.

The biggest change is a feature OpenAI calls “computer use.” Terra can look at what is on a computer screen, understand what it sees, and interact with the screen by clicking buttons, typing text, and switching between apps, much like a person would.

For example, Terra can be given a stream of incoming invoices to process. It can read each document and enter the needed information into accounting software. OpenAI says the model can also fill in forms, prepare business proposals, read technical drawings, and edit videos.

OpenAI also says the new model is better at understanding images. In one test, Terra turned architectural drawings into a 3D model. In another, it examined an animated film one frame at a time and created a log with timestamps for a team restoring the film. Terra scored 15 percentage points higher than the model it replaces in this test, while costing nearly three times less to run. OpenAI also said Terra came close to matching its most powerful GPT-6 Astra model while costing one-tenth as much.

OpenAI also reported that Terra makes fewer factual mistakes. In a set of questions designed specifically to find weaknesses in AI models, Terra’s error rate at the lowest reasoning setting dropped from 53.6% to 16.7%. For programmers, Terra completed about half the tasks in a coding test that uses a command line, achieving more than twice the previous model’s result. However, OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra for the hardest programming tasks.

OpenAI also compared Terra with Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5. According to OpenAI, Terra completed the tasks at about one-ninth of the cost. However, these results came from OpenAI’s own tests and have not been independently checked. The model is already available to ChatGPT users with Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu subscriptions. It is also available in Codex, OpenAI’s programming tool. Developers pay $1 per 1 million input tokens and $5 per 1 million output tokens. These prices are half the cost of GPT-5.6 Terra.

OpenAI stressed that, under its cybersecurity rules, Terra reaches the Critical level in its Preparedness Framework. OpenAI uses this framework to assess AI models’ ability to carry out potentially dangerous actions. Terra has the same safety protections as GPT-6 Astra.
