When OpenAI introduced its Dot agents late last month, it promised that users would eventually be able to text them with instructions. Now, almost a month later, the company has started testing this feature with Pro users in the US. You can send your Dot text messages, photos and even voice recordings. Your Dot can also contact you on its own to share updates about tasks you've asked it to handle.

Many people asked for this, and now you can text your dot.

Give it a task to handle for you or ask it to watch for something, using text, photos or even voice notes. It will send you useful updates by text without waiting for you to ask.

To set up texting for your Dot, open its profile in ChatGPT and select Texting. On your phone, make sure iMessage is turned on if you use an iPhone, or RCS is enabled if you use an Android phone. OpenAI says it worked with Linq to support messaging and carried out extensive security tests to check that the feature is safe. The company also says on X that only you can text your Dot, and your Dot can only text you. Any information your Dot saves to its memory is shared between ChatGPT and text messages, so it can use the same context in different conversations.

The market for personal AI agents has become much more competitive, especially since Anthropic introduced Claude Duet last week. In my tests, OpenAI's Dots feel more polished by comparison. Some people will likely appreciate being able to text them, too. To try Claude Duet, you currently need to join a waitlist that is only open to people in the US. Anthropic says it plans to make the agent available to subscribers of its Pro plan, which costs $20 per month. OpenAI's Dots, however, are not currently available to Plus subscribers.
