On October 21, after SpaceXSI, Meta and OpenAI, Anthropic became the latest AI company to release a personal agent. Like its competitors, the company describes Claude Duet as an AI helper that stays active and can complete tasks for you, even when you are away from your phone or computer. Duet runs on its own virtual computer. It has a special web browser that it can use to visit websites and complete tasks. It can also use any apps you have connected to your Claude account. If you want to know more about Claude Duet, here is what you need to know about when you can use it and how much it will cost.

How to join the Claude Duet waiting list

Claude Duet currently has a waitlist.Anthropic

At the time this article was written, Duet was still in preview. It was only available to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the US. You also need to join a waiting list before you can use it. You can find the waiting list on Anthropic's website. The company asks you to provide your name, company and email address. You must also say whether you use an Android phone or an iPhone. Finally, you need to write a short description of the work you want Claude to do for you. Anthropic asks which phone you use because Claude Duet has its own app for both Android and iOS.

What Anthropic plans include Claude Duet?

This could change, but Anthropic says Duet will be included with its Pro plan, which costs $20 per month, and more expensive plans. This is different from OpenAI's Dot agents. At the moment, you can only use those agents if you pay for one of OpenAI's Pro plans. The cheapest of these plans costs $100. OpenAI recently added another option that costs $500 per month. Anthropic has not yet made Claude Duet available to Team or Enterprise customers.

During the preview, Anthropic says Duet will share usage limits with all your other Claude apps, including Code and Cowork. I have not had a chance to try it yet, so I cannot say whether the Pro plan gives you enough usage to make Duet useful. However, Anthropic says it designed the agent to check your connected accounts every few hours. The company explains that checking them constantly would use up your plan's limits much faster. One reason Anthropic is letting people try Duet before making it widely available is to learn how often users want the agent to send them messages.

What can you do with Claude Duet?

An example of the morning briefings Claude Duet can generate.Anthropic

As mentioned earlier, Anthropic describes Duet as a personal assistant that can take action on its own. Every day, it can create a short report based on the apps connected to your Claude account. This report includes a list of things you may need to do. You can also give Claude Duet different tasks. For example, you can ask it to arrange meetings, make forecasts or build web apps. A business owner might ask Duet to create a weekly dashboard showing sales and cash flow. A scientist might ask it to find and point out new research papers about their field as soon as they are published.

Anthropic explains the difference this way: "The Claude app waits for you to open a chat, and you work on something alongside Claude. Claude Duet comes to you." The company says Duet tells you what needs your attention each morning, handles tasks you send it in messages and contacts you when a task is finished or when it needs your approval.

Duet can take action based on information in your Claude account. This includes information the chatbot has saved in its memory and information from apps you have connected to your Anthropic account. This means how useful Duet is for you will depend a lot on how much of your digital life you are comfortable sharing with Anthropic. Some people may feel that the privacy risks are too great to make it worthwhile.
