VTV.vn - The American technology group Meta Platforms has launched Muse Spark Open, an open-weighted version of its Muse Spark artificial intelligence (AI) model.

Unlike closed models such as Claude from Anthropic or ChatGPT from OpenAI, which are completely controlled by the developing company, open weighted models publicly disclose the parameters obtained after training, allowing users to download and customize them according to their needs. This is a more cost-effective option for businesses.

According to Meta, Muse Spark Open has a total of 816 billion parameters, of which 42 billion are active simultaneously, and can handle context frames of up to 1 million tokens. The model excels at long-running tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning, while also incorporating robust protection mechanisms.

Alexandr Wang, Director of AI at Meta, asserted that this is the most robust open-weighted model ever developed in the US.

Notably, Muse Spark Open is optimized to run on Apple 's M5 Ultra chip. Users can run the model locally on two Mac Studio machines using this chip, creating a "supercomputer" right on their desk.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the model runs very well on the new generation Mac Studio thanks to collaboration with Apple and new CEO John Ternus. For his part, Ternus, who took office in September, considered this an impressive step forward for AI on personal devices.

Meta's move comes as Chinese developers have risen to the top of the open-weighted AI model market in recent years, with prominent names such as Alibaba's Qwen, Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, and Z.ai's GLM. Meta claims its new product has comparable, or even superior, capabilities in some cases.

A few days earlier, Meta had introduced two closed-end models, Wonder and Wonder Full, which the company claims are on par with the most advanced versions of ChatGPT and Claude. In August, the company also released Muse Glimmer, a smaller, open-end weighted model.

Meta initially focused on open models, but recently Zuckerberg has pushed the company to compete with OpenAI and Anthropic. The Spark model, launched in April, marks a shift away from the lagging open-source Llama model. However, Zuckerberg still believes that advanced AI should not be concentrated in the hands of a few companies.

While open weighting models help businesses take a more proactive approach to data control, they still require significant computing resources and high technical expertise to operate at scale.
