Explore 50 Years of Mainframe Code: IN-COM Connects ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini and Grok to SMART TS XL
The SMART TS XL MCP Server lets AI assistants search, trace and explain billions of lines of business software code. Watch the live launch sessions on October 29 and November 2.
AUSTIN, TX, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A new integration helps organizations investigate older applications, find business rules and understand the risks of updating software by asking questions in everyday language.
IN-COM Data Systems announced the SMART TS XL MCP Server. This integration connects compatible AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini and Grok, to the information about business applications available through SMART TS XL.
The integration uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard way to connect AI applications to outside tools and data. Instead of asking an AI assistant to guess about private company code it has never seen, business teams can use MCP to request information from the application assets that SMART TS XL has indexed.
For organizations that maintain decades-old COBOL, PL/I, Natural and other essential business software, this difference matters. Even a small change can affect programs, data fields, databases, batch jobs and other applications that depend on them. Understanding these connections often requires a lot of manual research and help from developers who have supported the systems for many years.
"Enterprise AI becomes far more useful when it can work with the actual systems that run the business," said Shlomo Friman, CEO of IN-COM Data Systems. "Our goal is to connect familiar AI assistants with the code, dependencies and technical knowledge already available in SMART TS XL, so teams can ask better questions and make better-informed decisions."
From Everyday Questions to Technical Evidence
The SMART TS XL MCP Server connects conversational AI with SMART TS XL's existing tools for discovering and understanding applications. Depending on the connected assistant and the tools that have been set up, users can ask questions in everyday language to explore connections between applications, find references to code and examine technical findings.
Possible uses include:
Change impact analysis: Find programs, files and data elements that refer to a field or component before changing it.
Business-rule discovery: Investigate calculations, validation checks, exceptions and processing rules built into older applications.
Modernization planning: Examine dependencies and connections between systems before moving, replacing or rewriting applications.
Troubleshooting: Find error messages, related routines and connected processing steps to help narrow down a problem.
Knowledge transfer: Help newer developers understand how unfamiliar applications handle transactions and exchange information.
For example, a developer might ask which applications use a particular customer field and which other components could be affected by a planned change. SMART TS XL can provide relevant findings from its indexed information for the AI assistant to explain, while the technical team checks the evidence behind the answer.
This approach is meant to support engineering judgment, not replace it. Teams should check the results before making changes to live systems, especially in regulated industries or places where systems are essential to daily operations.
Understanding Business Systems Beyond the Mainframe
SMART TS XL helps organizations discover applications on mainframes and other types of systems, including IBM i/AS400, UNIX and distributed systems. Its features include searching source code, analyzing references between code elements, tracking COBOL fields, investigating dependencies, showing how programs flow, measuring complexity and finding technical documentation.
The platform can also bring useful application documents and database information into an investigation. This wider view matters because business processes rarely run inside just one program or type of system.
According to IN-COM's current operating figures, SMART TS XL indexes more than 5.7 billion lines of code and supports more than 3.8 million searches each year. These figures show the scale of application information that organizations can make easier to access with AI-assisted tools.
Preserving Knowledge Built Over Many Years
Many organizations are under increasing pressure to maintain aging applications as experienced specialists retire or move to other jobs. Important knowledge about business rules, past design choices and connections between applications may not be properly documented.
IN-COM says it has filed a patent application for an approach that allows MCP-enabled enterprise intelligence to improve over time. The idea is to include corrections and insights that experts have checked, so future investigations can use the knowledge the organization has built up.
The company sees this as a possible way to reduce repeated research, improve documentation and preserve expertise that might otherwise be difficult to recover.
Supporting Modernization While Keeping Disruption Low
Large companies are adopting AI and updating their applications while continuing to depend on systems that handle essential financial, business and customer transactions.
IN-COM says SMART TS XL has helped customers spend less time researching application changes and finding dependencies. The MCP Server is designed to make this information available through conversational tools that teams are increasingly using.
The integration does not automatically guarantee savings or remove the need for testing and review. Its value comes from helping teams find relevant technical information faster, understand possible effects and plan changes with greater confidence.
Live Demonstrations
IN-COM will hold two free online demonstrations of the SMART TS XL MCP Server. The sessions will show how AI-assisted questions can help people find code, analyze dependencies, investigate business rules and plan software modernization.
